Role Of Woman In 1984 - Free Essay Example

Living in a world where as a woman, you are were used only to reproduce and populate the party would have been terrible, but that is what all the women in 1984 experienced. 1984 is set as a dystopian society where the Party sees all, and controls all. Winston Smith, the main character, often wonders what the point of him living is, because he does not believe in the Party and hopes to someday rebel against them. In this society they are set up to be married with a stranger, and are only together so they can reproduce for the Party. During school, the Party teaches the children to spy on their parents. Winston had a few women in his life throughout the book, ones he cared for and others not so much. Women were not treated well in the society, and were only being used through the book, women were used for sex, even though there were a part of the anti-sex league. Love and marriage are very important for the Party, but not in a positive sense. The Party sees love and marriage as a compelling force and they try to regulate and suppress their people. Winston has a wife, Katherine, who he doesnt feel any connection to at all. He is only married to her because that is who the Party says Winston should be with. So the performance continued to happen, once a week quite regularly, whenever it was not impossible. She even used to remind him of it in the morning, as something which had to be done that evening and which must not be forgotten. She had two names for it. One was making a baby, and the other was our duty to the Party. (Orwell) Winston did not like being with Katherine, because she supported and listened to the Party. He had no feelings for her, but he had to be with her because of her duty. Winston did have a connection with a girl named Julia. She was much younger than Winston, and was not married. The two couldnt get married because the Party gets to choose who is with who. Confession is not betrayal. What you say or do doesnt matter, only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you that would be the real betrayal. (Orwell) Winston and Julia were soulmates even though they were not able to be married, they still shared similar beliefs, and truly wanted to be with each other before they got caught. Women are not always treated with respect in the present day, but they were not treated well in 1984 either. Women were used for pornosec and for reproducing. They were not well respected in the book. He leaned with astonishment that all the women in the Pornosec, except the head of the department, were girls. The theory was that men, whose sex instincts were less controllable than those of women, were in greater danger of being corrupted by the filth they handled. (Orwell) Women were not as valued as men were in the book, they were mostly used for sex and they didnt have good jobs. Also, a mothers job was to protect their children in the book, but often the mothers were evaporated. He never saw his mother again. When he came back his mother had disappeared. This was already becoming normal at that time. Nothing was gone from the room except his mother and his sister. They had not taken any clothes, not even his mothers overcoat. To this day he did not know with any certainty that hi s mother was dead. (Orwell) Winston had very few memories from his mother, but he thinks for some reason that he might have been the reason that his mother isnt around anymore. Winston doesnt know that if his mother is dead for sure, but since he didnt see her for so long he believes she is. Throughout 1984 some people that were apart of the anti-sex league, meaning that there a group of advocates completely celibacy for both sexes. The women that were a part of this group would wear a scarlet sash at all times. There was also a junior anti-sex league, that was against all children from having intercorse. A narrow scarlet sash, emblem of the Junior Anti-Sex League, was wound several times round the waist of her overalls, just tightly enough to bring out the shapeliness of her hips. Some girls were part of the anti-sex league, like Julia, who Winston would very often meet up with, while trying to keep it from the Party. Some women in the anti-sex league would participate in sex, but keep it from the government so they would not be used for the pornosec. The government had this group because they didnt want some women to take part in personal joys of life. If you were not apart of this group you would be required a once a week duty only to have control over their people. The women in Winstons life, and almost all women in 1984 were not treated well. It was a dystopian set society, where the government saw everything, and controlled everything. The women were not treated well, they were used and sometimes they even had joy taken away from them so they could not live their life they wanted to. Women were often evaporate, or killed their whole existence from the society if they did not live their life how the government wanted them to.

Conflict Resolution at General Hospital - 1081 Words

â€Å"Conflict Resolution at General Hospital† Christy D. Harris Dr. Jack Huddleston, Professor BUS520: Leadership and Organizational Behavior August 20, 2011 Discuss the conflict that is occurring at General Hospital. The conflict that is occurring at General Hospital is simply a case of making the right financial decisions and man vs. computer. What I mean by that is, in trying to make cost effective decisions on how to cut back on expenses they chose to replace capable human beings that gave accurate results with a computerized system that is not glitch free and has not been proven to give accurate readings and correct patient information on the right patients nor was it approved by the†¦show more content†¦He can then utilize the appropriate negotiation strategy to achieve a win-win situation. Then he can format a plan of action that will help them achieve this goal. Once this has been fully negotiated upon and an agreement has been reached he is then ready to present the final plan of action to the staff (board) and began making the necessary changes. Recommend a strategy for Hammer to resolve the problem. Instead of utilizing the Distributive negotiations strategy with the good cop bad cop approach that clearly didn’t work, I would recommend the Integrative negotiations strategy. This will allow all parties or departments involved to identify the problems, assess alternatives, discuss the pros and cons, and reach an agreement between all parties that would work for the hospital. Analysis Of James Baldwin s Sonny s Blues - 947 Words

Siblings will almost certainly be different. Each is unique in his/her own special way. This uniqueness will occasionally clash; thereby, causing what is often referred to as sibling rivalry. This individuality, in some instance, may not necessarily divest the relationship, but rather enrich it. James Baldwin somehow managed to convey this theory in his highly celebrated masterpiece, Sonny’s Blues. The story focuses on the lives of two exceedingly different brothers, one who live to abide by society’s laws while the other has fallen victim to its circumstances. The story is told through the view of the narrator who, through out the entire story, remained nameless. There is an immediate sense he was a dependable, respectful person. He was a teacher, a husband and a father and very fond of his younger brother and very concerned for his well being. He began by recounting a rather disturbing news article that struck him with intense trepidation. The article, although concerning Sonny, also embodies the narrator, his environment and society around him. Depravity beguiled not only his younger brother, but also a countless majority of his community. He claims â€Å"I stared at it in the swinging lights of the subway car and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside† (250). CD Package Design I was inspired by watercolor portraits and CD packaging designs from other students. I decided to incorporate this idea into the CD package design. Throughout the CD Package, I added a faded textured in the background of the design. Within the background on the back panel, I added a transparent photograph of a cricket to keep consistent with the title of the album name. Haskin and Megan M. Burke accessed from American Journal of Business Education. In this context, the report includes summary of article, discussion about its strengths and weakness, its implications in the accounting profession and relevance of the article in the financial accounting theory. At last, the report provides recommendations of the given financial accounting issue in the article and summarizes all the key points of the critique in the conclusion section. Summary of Article The article has discussed and emphasized the importance of sustainability reporting in the financial accounting field. The increasing significance of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and sustainability in the accounting settings is discussed in detail in the article. This is done through discussing the history of CSR and the importance of sustainability accounting. This is followed by discussing the development of Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) that has lead to the development of a conceptual framework that has lead to the development of standard guidelines for business entities to adopt sustainability reporting (Haskin and Burke, 2016). Critical Analysis of Article: Strengths of Published Article The article is highly relevant in the sense that it has helped in providing an understanding of the necessity of incorporating sustainability reporting in financial accounting for promoting long-term growth and development of business entities. The article has depicted that the introduction of the concept of Sustainability Accounting for disclosing non-financial information related to society, environment and economic performance of a business entity to its stakeholders. The article has depicted that adoption of sustainability accounting practices are highly necessary for a business entity to promote its sustainable development and growth. The concept of financial accounting only focuses on providing information related to the profitability of a business entity and ignores completely its non-financial objectives (Bebbington et al., 2014). Thus, the article has reflected that the main aim of incorporating sustainability accounting is to provide recognition to the non-financial objecti ves of a business entity. The article has also illustrated the role of Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) for integrating sustainability reporting practices within the financial accounting settings. Thus, the article has incorporated all the necessary information that is relevant for providing an understanding of the significance of sustainability accounting for business entities. Therefore, the main strength of the article is enriched qualitative information relating to the accounting concept of Sustainability Accounting for depicting its relevance in contemporary accounting. Also, the article is easy to understand with providing precise and relevant information relating to the research topic (Haskin and Burke, 2016). Weaknesses of the published article The article though proves to be quite advantageous in providing an insight into the contemporary accounting concept of sustainability reporting is also associated with some weaknesses. The major weakness of the selected research article is that it is purely subjective in nature and thus lacks objectivity. The research study lacks the collection of quantitative information and thus lacks practical evidence in support of theoretical arguments presented. The article relies only on the collection of theoretical information gathered through the secondary data analysis. The secondary data is collected from peer reviewed journals and article s but it has not emphasized on gathering practical data for providing a valid conclusion. Therefore, the research article lacks credibility and validity in the eyes of readers and thus its applicability in future accounting researches is limited. Also, the research article is not well-structured and thus lacks sequential flow of information. The researc h article lacks a proper format that can cause the lack of interests in readers. Thus, all these limitations have impacted the usefulness of the selected research article in future context (Haskin and Burke, 2016). Implications to the Accounting Profession The accounting profession is associated with undergoing continuous changes due to ongoing developments in the regulatory environment of accounting. The accounting profession needs to respond immediately to changes in the market situations for meeting the needs and demands of stakeholders of a business entity (Hopwood et al., 2010). As such, the introduction of the concept of sustainability accounting into the accounting field is associated with major implications for the accounting profession. The professional accounting bodies such as IASB (International Accounting Standards Board) have pointed about the trend of sustainability accounting that accountants need to possess adequate knowledge for promoting sustainable growth of a business enterprise (Sustainability: The Role of Accountants, 2004). The published research article is highly relevant in this regard as it has provided adequate knowledge to the accounts about the concept and increasing importance of Sustainability Accounting in accounting profession. This is necessary for accountants to abide by the mandatory rules and standards developed by international accounting bodies such as SASB relating to sustainability accounting and reporting. The accountants can gain pertinent information relating to the reporting of sustainability, its importance and its benefits for promoting societal and environmental development of a business entity. The changing expectations of a business entity stakeholders relating to the responsible attitude towards society and environment is important for accountants to meet their needs and demands effectively (Herz, 2016). Thus, in this regard, the selected research article has high significance for the accounting profession for gaining knowledge about the wide-range of sustainability related issues and develops financial reports as per the standard guidelines provided by conceptual framework of SASB (Haskin and Burke, 2016). Relevance to Financial Accounting Theory Financial accounting theory refers to the standard set of principles and conventions used in preparation and development of financial reports. The financial accounting theories are developed on the standard assumptions and guidelines provided by the conceptual framework of accounting. The main purpose of financial accounting theory is to disclose useful information to the end-users for critical business and economic decisions. The financial accounting theory states that information disclosed by a business entity must be relevant, reliable, comparable and consistent for meeting the stakeholders needs appropriately (Jones, 2015). As such, the published article is highly relevant for matching the standards principles of financial accounting theory. The article has emphasized that the main objective of financial accounting should not be limited only to maximize value for its shareholders but promote the overall development of all its stakeholders including its customers and community. Th erefore, in order to achieve reliability and transparency in financial reporting, the accounting field must incorporate the concept of sustainability that discloses all the facts and information related to the economic, social and environmental performance of businesses (Eccles, 2016). The financial accounting theories must incorporate the concept of sustainability so that financial reports are developed and presented as per the conceptual framework published by SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board). The article has stated that the main objective of adopting sustainability in accounting is to help business entities for disclosing material, decision-useful information to the end-users. Therefore, the article is highly relevant to meet the standard principle and guidelines advocated by the financial accounting theory as the incorporation of sustainability will help in providing materialistic and useful information to the stakeholders (Haskin and Burke, 2016). Recommendations On the basis of the main arguments presented in the research article, it is recommended to businesses worldwide to adopt the principle of sustainability accounting during financial reporting. This is required to achieve transparency and authenticity in business operations by promoting stakeholder engagement. The incorporation of the concept of sustainability accounting will state the societal and environment development practices adopted by a business entity and thus strengthen its brand image on an international level. The developments of goodwill in the eys of stakeholders will increase the profitability and performance of a business entity leading to its sustainable growth and development (Freedman and Jaggi, 2010). It is recommended to business entities to integrate CSR and the sustainability issues in financial accounting as per the conceptual framework of SASB. The SASB works in co-operation with other international accounting bodies such as FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board) and SEC (Securities Exchange Commission). Thus, abiding by the standards assumptions and conventions of SASB is essential for business entities worldwide for ensuring their long-term growth and successes as illustrated in the selected research article (Haskin and Burke, 2016). Conclusion It is concluded from the critical analysis of the research article that it has explored and examined a relatively new concept in accountings settings of sustainability reporting. The overall analysis of the article has inferred that sustainability reporting is now becoming an integral part of financial reporting in business entities to achieve sustainability through effective stakeholder engagement. The disclosure of important information about the impacts of business operations of society ad environment is essential for corporations to promote transparency. The stakeholders including customers and government can gain all the financial and non-financial information about a business entity performance. This will help a business entity to achieve customer satisfaction and support of government thus ensuring is long-term survival. References Bebbington, J., Unerman, J. and O'Dwyer, B. 2014. The Meaning Of Hacker Is One Who Accesses A Computer Which Is Supposab

The meaning of Hacker is one who accesses a computer which is supposably not able to be accessed to non authorised people of the community. Hackers may use any type of system to access this information depending on what they intend on doing in the system. Methods Hackers may use a variety of ways to hack into a system. First if the hacker is experienced and smart the hacker will use telnet to access a shell on another machine so that the risk of getting caught is lower than doing it using their own system. Ways in which the hacker will break into the system are: 1) Guess/cracking passwords. This is where the hacker takes guesses at the password or has a crack program to crack the password protecting the system. 2) Finding back doors is another way in which the hacker may get access to the system. This is where the hacker tries to find flaws in the system they are trying to enter. 3) One other way in which a hacker may try to get into a system is by using a program called a WORM. This program is specially programmed to suit the need of the user. This programme continually tries to connect to a machine at over 100 times a second until eventually the system lets in and the worm executes its program. The program could be anything from getting password files to deleting files depending on what it has been programmed to do. Protection The only way that you or a company can stop a Hacker is by not having your computer connected to the net. This is the only sure fire way in which you can stop a hacker entering your system. This is mainly because hackers use a phone line to access the system. If it is possible for one person to access the system then it is possible for a hacker to gain access to the system. One of the main problems is that major companies need to be networked and accessible over the net so that employees can do overdue work or so that people can look up things on that company. Also major companies network their offices so that they can access data from different positions. One way which is used to try to prevent hackers gaining access is a program used by companies called a Firewall. A Firewall is a program which stops other connections from different servers to the firewall server. This is very effective in stopping hackers entering the system. Tho this is not a fool proof way of stopping hackers as it can be broken and hackers can get in. Tho this is a very good way of protecting your system on the InterNet. Major Hacks Some of the major hacks that have been committed have been done by young teens aged between 14 and 18. These computer geniuses as they are known have expert knowledge on what they are doing and also know the consequences. Tho the consequences do not really enter there mind when they are doing it. This hack occurred on February 10, 1997, and again on February 14, 1997 Portuguese hackers launched a political attack on the web page of the Indonesian government, focusing on that country's continued oppression of East Timor. The attack was online for about 3 hours from 7.00 PM to 10.00 PM (Portuguese Time) at the web site of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Indonesia. The hackers did not delete or change anything. The said "We just hack pages". Another major hack that occurred was on April 1 1981 by a single user. This hacker who was situated in an east coast brokage house was interested in the stock market. SO he purchased $100,000 worth of shares in the stock market. Then he hacked into the stock markets main computers and stole $80 million dollars. The hacker was eventually caught although $53 million dollars was not recovered. On Wednesday, March 5 1997 The home page of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's was recently hacked and the contents changed. The group known as H4G1S. This group of hackers managed to change the contents of the webpage The hacking group changed the webpage and left a little message for all. It said " Gr33t1ngs fr0m th3 m3mb3rs 0f H4G1S. Our mission is to continue where our colleagues the ILF left off. During the next month, we the members of H4G1S, will be launching an attack on

Drought Causes, Stages, and Problems

Drought Causes, Stages, and Problems Every year as summer approaches, areas around the world grow concerned about seasonal drought. Throughout the winter, many places monitor precipitation and the snowpack to prepare for what the warmer, drier months may bring. In addition, there are areas where drought is a regular year to year occurrence that lasts longer than just the summer. From hot deserts to the freezing poles, drought is something that affects plants, animals, and people worldwide. What Is a Drought? Drought is defined as a period in which a region has a deficit in its water supply. Drought is a normal feature of climate which happens in all climate zones from time to time. Usually, drought is talked about in one of two perspectives- meteorological and hydrological. A drought in terms of meteorology takes into account deficiencies in measured precipitation. Each years measurements are then compared to what is determined as a normal amount of precipitation and drought is determined from there. For hydrologists, droughts are monitored by checking stream flow and lake, reservoir, and aquifer water levels. Precipitation is also considered here as it contributes to the water levels. In addition, there are agricultural droughts that can impact crop production and cause changes to the natural distribution of various species. The farms themselves can also cause droughts to happen as the soil is depleted and therefore cannot absorb as much water, but they can be impacted by natural droughts as well. Causes Because drought is defined as a deficit in water supply, it can be caused by a number of factors. The most important one though relates to the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere as this is what creates precipitation. More rain, sleet, hail, and snow can occur where there are moist, low-pressure air systems. If there is an above average presence of dry, high-pressure air systems instead, less moisture is available to produce precipitation (because these systems cannot hold as much water vapor). This results in a deficit of water for the areas over which they move. The same can also happen when winds shift air masses and warm, dry, continental air moves over an area as opposed to cooler, moist, oceanic air masses. El Nino, which affects the oceans water temperature, also has an impact on precipitation levels because, in years when the temperature cycle is present, it can shift the air masses above the ocean, often making wet places dry (drought prone) and dry places wet. Finally, deforestation for agriculture and/or building combined with the resultant erosion can also cause drought to begin because as the soil is moved away from an area it is less able to absorb moisture when it falls. Stages of Drought Since many areas, regardless of their climatic region, are prone to drought, different definitions of the stages of drought have developed. They are all somewhat similar, however, usually ranging from a drought warning or watch, which is the least severe. This stage is declared when a drought could be approaching. The next stages are mostly called drought emergency, disaster, or critical drought stage. This final stage begins after a drought has occurred for a long period and water sources begin to be depleted. During this stage, public water use is limited and oftentimes drought disaster plans are put into place. Short and Long Term Consequences Regardless of a droughts stage, there are short and long term consequences with any drought because of nature and societys dependence on water. Problems associated with drought can have economic, environmental, and social impacts on both the areas where they occur and areas that have relations with those where the drought happens. Most of the economic impacts of drought are associated with agriculture and the income generated from crops. In times of drought, the lack of water can often cause a decline in crop yields, and thus a reduction in income for farmers and an increase in the market price of products since there is less to go around. In a prolonged drought, unemployment of farmers and even retailers can occur, having a significant impact on the economy of the area and those with economic ties to it. In terms of environmental problems, drought can result in insect infestations and plant diseases, increased erosion, habitat and landscape degradation, a decrease in air quality and that of what water is present, as well as an increased risk of fire because of drier vegetation. In short-term droughts, natural environments can often rebound, but when there are long term droughts, plant and animal species can suffer tremendously, and over time desertification can happen with an extreme lack of moisture. Finally, droughts have social impacts that can cause disputes between users of available water, inequalities in water distribution between wealthy and poor, disparities in areas in need of disaster relief, and a decline in health. In addition, in rural developing countries population migration can begin when one area experiences drought because often people will go to areas where water and its benefits are more prevalent. This then depletes the natural resources of the new area, can create conflicts among neighboring populations and takes workers away from the original area. Over time, increased poverty and social unrest are likely to develop. Drought Mitigation Measures Because severe drought is often slow in its development, it is relatively easy to tell when one is coming and in areas that are capable, there are several mitigation measures that can be used to reduce the impacts felt by drought. The most important steps in lessening the effects of drought though are soil and water conservation. By protecting soil, it is better able to absorb precipitation, but it can also help farmers to use less water because it is absorbed and not as much run off. It also creates less water pollution by the pesticides and fertilizers present in most farm runoff. In water conservation, public use is often regulated. This mostly includes watering yards, washing cars and outdoor fixtures such as patio tables, and swimming pools. Cities such as Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada have also implemented the use of xeriscape landscaping to reduce the need to water outdoor plants in dry environments. In addition, Water conservation devices like low-flow toilets, shower heads, and washing machines can be required for use inside the home. Finally, desalination of seawater, water recycling, and rainwater harvesting are all things that are currently under development to build on existing water supplies and further reduce the impacts of drought in dry climates. Whatever method is used, however, extensive monitoring of precipitation and water usage are the best way to prepare for a drought, inform the public on the problem, and implement conservation strategies.

Zara Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Zara Business - Essay Example From there it expanded into 79 countries with 1,830 stores all across Asia, Europe, Africa and America (Qureshi, Store Wars: Zara and Mango, 2012).Its main focus has always been creativity, quality of design and rapid response time. Zara’s main target customers have always been young, price-conscious people who are very sensitive to latest fashion trends. According to the article ‘Analyzing Zara’s Business model’ its product line is divided in to 60% for women, 25% for men and 15% fast growing children (Analysing Zara’s business model , 2011). Main customers of Zara are middle class urban women for whom fashion means everything. The customers of this particular brand wants trendy, fashionable and unique outfits at an affordable price and up to date with the new up coming fashion trends. Another unique characteristic of this particular brand is that they take very less time in identifying and bringing their products to shelves that is with in 30 days where as others may take around 3-4 months (Analysing Zara’s business model , 2011). This is possible mainly due to their control on garment supply chain from design to retail unlike many other competitive stores. It is possible as most of the manufacturing is being done in-house. 50% of the products are produced in house where as 46% are framed out into ready to cut pieces (Roux, 2002) Zara’s core mission has always been a blend of creative, quality and rapid response to market demands. To achieve this a business model was framed that depended on two main points. One being quick response to changing fashion and second being involvement of employees at a large scale. For instance a store manager could decide which clothes to put on sale in that particular store according to the response of customers shopping there. The vaiety of clothing also becomes a main selling point of the brand. In the article Reign of Spain the author talks about how a model never stays in the s hop for more than four weeks. This increases the visists of the customers, for Zara’s its 17 times a year where as for other similar competitive stores its only 3 to 4 times a year (Roux, 2002). In around four to five weeks new collections are available. It’s designer team comprises of around 2 thousand designers which produce 12,000 models each year for sale which are designed kept in mind customer preferences, wishes and demands. Since every four weeks the stores are hit by new models the quantity produced of each model is very less making it a unique piece which makes customers rush to stores to grab them before they run out this has made its customers in to serious impulse buyers. Unlike other brands Zara spends very less on advertisement which is around 0.3% of its total revenue unlike other competitors which spend around 3-4%. Instead they spend heavily on their stores which are located in prime locations of cities. The complany is built upon a vertically integra ted demand and supply chain while most textile chains rely on outsourcing and cheap labor in China. Vertically integrated are companies that are linked together by a single owner it gives Zara a greater control over the whole process from manufacture to retail which helps it fulfill its main idea of its business plan which is to respond quickly to demands and fashion trends. The operational cycle of Zara includes three main basic steps ordering, fulfillment and design and manufacturing. Each store places order twice a week to headquarters to replenish items and for new stocks. These orders are sent to stores in two days. The design and manufacturing goes throughout the year. New models are continously hitting stores unlike other competitive firms that lauch collections for just summer, spring, fall and winter. Another competitive

Formalism in Art and Design

Formalism in Art and Design When thinking about formalism there is a larger perceived concept in society about this movement; there are many different types of formalism present in civilization which includes formalism in law, science, and art and design etc. This essay will focus on formalism in art and design specifically and certain questions will be answered to make the subject clear; what is formalism? How does formalism differ from other processes in art making? Why is this art movement so important to design? What era and movement in art do we specifically ascribe formalism to? This essay will also include three pictures that subscribe notions of formalism and will be briefly discussed. Each of these questions will be examined and answered to clarify the concept of formalism to a person who is not familiar with this movement. FORMALISM What is formalism? Many people believe that formalism only focuses on the form of an artwork or design which is not necessarily accurate because according to Wolf; formalism is the balance of certain elements in a design or painting. Formalism has a specific approach of art criticism and hypothesis to which all visual art has a fundamental importance. This importance is determined by the artists ability to accomplish a visual order and the balance of certain elements reality within a painting or image. These elements reality are the painting or image use of colour, line, composition and texture. No matter how much artistic technique and taste may transform over a period of time, formalism holds that these realities are constant (Wolf, 2009:[sp]). There is a theory developed of formalism that the object can stand on its own based on its construction significance according to Nelingburg; that formalism is art for the sake of art (Nelingburg, 2011: [sp]). Platos Theory of form When looking at Platos Theory of Form, it is a theory that can be used to assist with the understanding of formalism. The philosopher, Plato developed a Theory of Forms based on the proposal of eidos, which basically means stature or appearance. Plato applied the phrase generally in his diverse dialogues to propose a rudimentary general language. Every earthly object; a tangible object (like a chair) or abstract object (like human asset), has a mutual characteristic; all of the objects have form. Platos hypothesis is better understood when looking at his Allegory of the Cave; he visualises a cave which held captive prisoners who had never left the cave, all the prisoners could see were workers shadows cast on the cave walls, and all they could hear were the voices echoing in the cave. This is all that the prisoners knew about the outside world, so they perceived the voices and shadows as actual forms of real objects and were absolutely unaware that the forms were just mimicries of th e genuine things. Plato stated that the prisoners perception of objects was not false; because of their understanding of the world; by their understanding of the world, the shadows and echoes were the actual forms, just as a painting of a woman is as real, if not more real, than the actual woman who is depicted on the canvas. (Wolf, 2009:[sp]). The people imagined to be trapped in the cave have no idea of what the world looks like, so by just seeing the shadows and hearing the noises, this is all they will ever experience from the outside world, this is what is real to them because they have not been exposed to anything else. How does formalism differ from other processes in art making? The starting point of formalism is deeply ingrained in ancient thought, for they believed that the cosmos is ruled by numerical association, or in the concept of form as inelegant quality of things, imposed upon or intrinsic and these ideas were applied to art (Williams, 2009: [sp]). Formalists only concentrated on formal assets of works of art and assume that these forms follow their own development (Hatt, Klonk, 2006: 66). This shows the different believes that the formalist had about the art and how they applied this to the art process. One of the characteristics of formalism is that the artist was concerned with the manner of perception of the forms in the absence of any connotation. Kant proposes it that formalism refers to assets of seeing of objects (Crysler Cairns Heynen, 2012: [sp]). Where as in other movements is art such as Art Nuevo form was not that important, artists were more concerned with the decoration of the design and this was where mass production first occurre d. It is said that this era was the first time that modern civilisation used mechanism to construct designs (Wolf, 2009:[sp]). Why is formalism important to design? As stated above (What is formalism) that formalism focus on the importance of balancing elements in a design, (Wolf, 2009: [sp]); this aspect is applicable when looking at the design process of today, the use of elements will determine the principles which if the design achieves balance, it represents formalist characteristic. The theory of formalism states that it places emphasis on the design value; this theory implies that the most essential aspect of a work of art or design is the successful arrangement of the elements through the principles of design (Kjeria, 2008: [sp]). According to these points, if a design does not use the balance of elements, the design will not be successful and this is where formalism influenced the designing method of today. What era and movement is formalism ascribed to? It is claimed that within the early decades of 20th century there was an apprehension for formal qualities known as the formalism movement, it has been seen as the characteristic of art criticism (Schechter, [sa]: 261). The movement that formalism can be recognized to is modernism since much of the research done on formalism is connected with the modernism movement. The implement of artistic freedom became essential to progressive modernism; artists began to search for freedom not just from the rules of scholastic art, but from the demands of the community. Quickly it was claimed that art should not be made for the publics sake but for arts sake. The term art for art sake is also used (mentioned in previous paragraph) to describe modernism, this states that a call for discharge from the oppression of meaning and intention. Witcombe declared it a developing modernists point of view, that the meaning of the creation was an additional implement of freedom. It is also said to be a plot, another intentional disrespect towards the middle class responsiveness which demanded art with meaning or it had some reason such as instruct or pleasure and usually to reflect in some way their own focused and purpose-full world (Witcombe, 1997: [sp]). This quote; art for art sake is mention by Witcombe and Nelingburg, thus it may imply that there are subtle similarities between formalism and modernism. Modernism vs. Formalism The 20th century has focused its artistic awareness on progressive modernism to the extent that conformist modernism has been abandoned and derides as an art form. It is speculated that modernism art is practised completely within a closed formalist speciality, essentially detached from, not to be infected by the real world. In particular, abstraction, formalism could adopt the advantages of the progressives, who used it in justification of modernism, which has been particularly open to criticism. In the early 20th century, formalism was also efficiently united with other objectives of progressive modernism, universalism (Witcombe, 1997: [sp]). It can be assumed that the formalist and modernist movements were infused with each other in order to be seen as an art movement; they both needed each other to have subsisted. Formalist artworks Dare two In this artwork the artist used several elements to create a balance in the composition, which is what formalism portrays; the artist commemorates the new direction in geometrical abstraction and spiritual associations. The other element used in this piece was colour, it has reflection towards movements such as Neo Geo and formalism gives way to underlining perceptive progression and the enjoyment of art making (2012: [sp]). Repetition is also seen in the art; by repeating the colours, line and forms, this principle creates a unifying feature to the art as whole. By using some of the elements and principles in a balancing method the viewer can distinguish that it has a formalistic value. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of abstract is: thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances, this artwork also has these qualities of abstract art which can also be classified as abstract formalism. Untitled For Joel Shapiro (the artist) form is the most important characteristic of this untitled sculpture, according to Nelingburg, form was essential to the artist because emphasise of the sculpture is based on its physical structure and form, the sculpture relies on abstraction. There is a lot of awareness brought on the figures based on the materials that were used and the colours that make them, but the main focus is the shape and what they symbolize since it portrays the human body (Nelingburg, 2011:[sp]). By looking at the characteristics of the figure, it can be assumed that the artist successfully used the elements that are present in the model in an equal way, but in this case the form was the most important element present because it is a sculpture. As stated above (what is formalism), according to Nelingburg, there is a presumption developed that an artwork can stand on its own foundation based on aesthetic values, when specifically looking at formalistic sculptures (2011: [sp]). Friendly Formalism S. Stratton and J. M. Ward, art critics express that Ps Qs as friendly formalism, the artwork flirts with the rigidity of the 20th century formalism, but gives it a current 21th century twist. This artwork is described as playful, which is definitely far more cherished and forthcoming than the canonical mid-century artworks that are connected with the formalist philosopher Clement Greenbergs theories: works of art are colourful, relish their acquisitiveness, and opposed to the hard-edged perfectionism have a propensity to be associated with Piet Mondrian and Le Corbusiers designs (Pittman, 2010:[sp]). By looking at these aspects mentioned by Stratton and Ward, it is clear that this painting unquestionably has formalism virtues, because of the elements used such as colour, line, forms which creates the principles that are associated with the painting. The main element used there was the forms that are presented and the cold colours, all of these characteristics declared that this art work represents formalism. This artwork can also be classified as abstract formalism because the main idea of the piece is left to the imagination. Conclusion Formalism was a movement that wanted to create artworks just because of arts sake; it was about the artistic skill of how the artists balance certain elements in the art to accomplish balance. The movement can also be redefined by Platos theory, so that it can be understood when not grasping the concept of formalism as a movement. Formalism has its own characteristics and so does many other art movements, which is why formalism is unique and uses its own art development when creating a design or artwork by using certain elements and using them equally to accomplish balance. By knowing what the characteristics of formalism are, it is easy to see why formalism had such a great impact on current designs and artworks. Although formalism was present in the early 20th century and was mostly connected with modernism, these aspects of formalism and even modernism is still seen in designs and artworks of the modern day. Especially the artworks mentioned in this essay, all three of these paint ings and the sculpture are works of art that were created in the 21th century, all of the pieces have formalist qualities and characteristics even though they were not produced too long ago. Formalism is a delicate movement since it is complicated generates an artwork by balancing the elements equally and producing a piece that stands for art for the sake of art. Each question that was mentioned in the introduction was acknowledged and discussed in this essay, the questions of formalism became obvious to the reader; therefore knowing what formalism entails.
